Radiation treatment in its own is not an effective treatment for mesothelioma, as the levels needed to efectively eradicate it without first surgically removing it would be much too toxic to the human body.

Chemotherapy:

Chemotherapy has long been used in the treatments of all kinds of different cancers, and it is also used to treat mesothelioma. This method of treatment for mesothelioma can be very uncomfortable for the patient, as side effects often include vomiting among other non too pleasant ones.

Generally chemotherapy is used in conjunction with surgery and or radiation therapies as well.

Immunotherapy:

Immunotherapy is still in the development stage when it comes to the treatment of mesothelioma. The most successful trials involved something known as interferon alpha. Of all the trials performed this trial was the most successful, with no major side effects reported, and twenty percent of patients had a fifty percent reduction in the size of their tumors.

Heated Intraoperative Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy:

Heated Intraoperative Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy, is a process which is done during surgery. The doctors remove as much of the mesothelioma tumor as possible, and they then inject a chemotherapy agent, which is heated to between forty and forty-eight degrees celcius, into the abdomen.

Heating up the chemotherapy agents allows the injected medicines to work more effectively, and the additional heat damages the mesothelioma cells more than the normal cells.

Multmodality Therapy:

Multimodality therapy is just a mixture of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

It should be noted that while there are various treatments available for mesothelioma, there is rarely a cure.

There have been great advances in the science of treating mesothelioma, and someday soon we will find a cure.
